AFSer Patrick: Thanksgiving in China

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So as you are all aware Thanksgiving was last Thursday. As you might expect, here in Hong Kong they didn't bat an eyelash. Other than a brief segment on TV about George Bush Pardoning a turkey there was nothing.

Except at my house. I decided that I was going to have Thanksgiving this year anyways to share some of American culture with my family. This is after i was walking through Taste (a grocery store that imports a lot of western food) and saw frozen turkeys. So I set to work. I collected recipes from my father, and last Tuesday I went to Taste and bought all the fixings. Read more.

So this last weekend I went to Santo Domingo with Ramona, which was cool because usually AFS doesn't let people travel without family, but i got permission to go with Ramona and stay for one night in her sister´s house, and her mom is visiting from Santomas and we went shopping with her and her cousin. It was fun because in Santo Domingo they have big malls and lots of stores :) except it´s not cheaper here. I was looking for Converse, and in one of the only stores that had a good variety they were like 60 dollars! Read more.

AFSer Chelsea: Turkey Day in France

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

This month has gone by UNBELIEVABLY FAST. It feels like October. Or maybe August? Anyways, lycée (school) has been going along like usual. I am way more comfortable with my friends here, and my classes are fairly interesting. (Je crois que j'ai la moyenne dans presque tout!) I found a jazz band that plays with the Ecole de Musique here that I might join, and I can play a sport after school on Wednesday afternoons.

I listened to Fred's advice and I'm trying my best to do things with my friends outside of school, and I'm having a little fête for Thanksgiving next Sunday, and inviting some friends from school to my house for a big traditional American dinner. Read more.

On Sunday AFS took us to on of the Islands around Istanbul and we spent the day there and biked. The island was absolutely beautiful and I really wish I had my camera. Luckily I think Gabe (another AFSer) took some pictures so perhaps when he post them I'll steal them and post them here. hehe. Biking through the island was very relaxing and calming. I don't often stop and take in my surroundings but I'm glad I did here. Also I got to try an amazing Turkish waffle. A Turkish waffle is very different than in the states... Read more.

I know that all the exchange students out there will understand exactly what they are saying and everyone else will be wondering .... "that's funny??" but here is a taste of the life of an exchange student everyone. While not all of these apply to me a lot of them still do and even if they don't there really funny to read. So I hope you all enjoy them:

You Know You're an Exchange Student When...

1) You spend a lot of time smiling, nodding, and pretending you understand what's going on.
2) Your dreams are bilingual.
3) You've tried so many different foods only because you can't understand the person asking you what you want. You just nod your head, say "yes," and pray that it tastes half-decent.
4) You're better than your teacher in your foreign language class.
5) You've said something like 'oh yes' or 'no thanks' only to have everyone laugh because your answer made no sense compared to the question.
6) You have gone in to greet someone with a handshake and found yourself being pulled into an awkward hug/double kiss on the cheek.
7) You sometimes walk around school during breaks to act like you're doing something because you don't see anyone you recognize and don't want to stand there awkwardly.
8) It becomes a habit to introduce yourself by saying: "I am from (country) and my name is (name)."
9) You actually got a high-five when you understood what someone said to you.
10) You do something wrong, people look at you weird, and your excuse is: "Well, that's how we do it in my country," even if it isn't. Read more.

Summer in Paraguay is pretty much described in one word: laziness. I've been on summer break now for around a month, I've been having sooo much fun! As most of you know, my first week of break was spent in the Chaco, I worked hard and had a blast, but these other three weeks have been even more fun! Read more.

AFSer Kallie: Panama's Beach Holiday

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So the start of November means the start of the Patriotic holiday month!!!!

For the big holiday week I headed to the beach with my family. We went to a beach called Corona and we were out there with a bunch of my families friends at my families good friend Ferrufino's beach house. We spent the day playing in the waves, laying on the beach, and eating very yummy food!

I also spent some time with vilde and her new sister Ilicena who is a good friend of mine and together we went to the movies and to the disco as well! Read more.

Over the vacation after (Indian) New Years, my host family and I took a trip to Valsad, Gujarat. While we were in Valsad, we took quite a few day trips to nearby towns and sight seeing places. For example, one morning before it became too hot, we took a hike up to three temples on top of a mountain. It was lots of fun!! The same day, we went directly to the family farm where we watched my host Grandfather water the mango trees, etc. The next day we visited a botanical garden, a waterfall and a small village where they make items out of bamboo to sell to people!!! Hola everyone, sorry I haven´t written in a while! I´ve been so busy! (that's good though!)

My 16th birthday was yesterday! Yay it was nice and cool, which was nice for me :) At school everyone was so cool - they all came up and gave me hugs and wished me a feliz cumpleaños and many more. the people in my class were like -- she needs a cake! she needs a cake! 50 cent everyone! Then they went out and bought a cake and brought it to my class! They sang and I blew out the candles. Then they said, "take a bite out of the side of the cake now! go ahead!" and I was like "okay.." So I leaned down to take a bite -- and they pushed my face into the cake! I had frosting all over my face! Haha! It turns out it is a tradition at every birthday in Ecuador! Read more.

As you can probably tell from the title of this, life here is good! I am not constantly traveling to some different part of Iceland; I am not going to museums and shows every day; instead I am just living a daily life. I am in between a local and a tourist, and it is really interesting. I see things differently than the Icelanders because of my different background and values (and literally see things differently because things here are so much more pretty than in dirty Jersey!) yet I also understand things better than tourists because I am learning so much about how things work here and I am not seeing an Iceland that has been put together for me by a tour company...Read more.

AFSer Kendra: Halloween in Italy

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

So me and my (host) sister decided about 2 weeks ago that we were going to have a Halloween party. So a week before Halloween, we started cooking all these different cookies and cupcakes and figuring out how we were going to decorate the house and everything. Which was a lot of fun but also a lot of work for food we had: Ghost, pumpkin, bat, mummy and headstone shaped cookies, a grave yard themed pizza, Halloween shaped sandwiches, Halloween colored cupcakes, a gelatin face with the brain coming out, and little hot dog mummies. (for pictures check out my picture web sight!)

We also decorated the house with ghosts, fake dust, paper cutouts in different shapes, and a headless woman. Ele invited all of her friends and I invited all of the AFS kids but only Lilla, Hendrikje, and Yue were able to come but we had soooo much fun. Read more.
