The next morning we had this HUGE dutch style breakfast with bread and crossiants and pannakoeken (: (sp?) it was so good, but then we had to go back home for actual Christmas day. So After we watched 2 episodes of Law and Order :) We went home and had gourmetta (the same thing we did for Thanksgiving) with Joy Vincent (host brother) and his girlfriend. It was nice but I was already so full from breakfast so I didn't really eat much.

For the weekend of Immaculate Conception (we had a three day weekend) I went to Rome with my host family and some of their friends. Saturday, I left school early and we were off to Rome! It took about 5 or 6 hours to get there from my town. On the way, we stopped at a rest stop close to Naples and I got to eat a muffin (finally!!) and heard the Naples accent! For a while my host dad has been joking around about the Naples accent and when we entered the rest stop and heard a man talking he was like "Emily! Emily!! Naples accent! Listen!!!" Read more.

Things have definiltly cooled down on my side of the planet! The most drastic change that's happened since my last post has been the drop in temperature. At about -7 celcius for the mornings and 0 for the day on average? It's proven to keep my rapidly walking every morning to and from school, as well as run extra fast at cross in the afternoons to keep my body temp up. Read more.

Today is the first day of my Christmas break. I'll be going back to school on January 13th, but in the meantime I look forward to plenty of rest, a bit of exploring, some time with classmates, and a whole lot of time with my host family and their relatives as I share in the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Yesterday we got to see Breda (I'll add pictures)! It's a really pretty, old city not too far west of Eindhoven. We just explored really, walked around a bit and shopped (none of us got anything unless you count my Olliebol). In the afternoon we parted ways and I trekked back home, hung out for a bit, then it was time to wind it up again. I had invited my friends over to meet Birgit and Eric and then we'd just chill at my house. So they got here in the evening after a little trouble and we just talked and messed around and they got to meet my host parents (which I thought was important for both sides since I talk about each to the other so often). Before I left for Costa Rica, I had a list of expectations concerning how I would progress in learning the language. The first month I expected to be completely lost. The second month I expected to be able to understand everything, and the third month I expected to be fluent. But what does fluent even mean?

Here's what I've observed in my Spanish-learning experience:

1) First day: Wow! I speak pretty darn well...but can't understand a thing that these people are saying.
2) First two weeks: I was wrong, I'm actually pretty bad at Spanish... I can't understand or speak well. Good thing I'm not afraid to draw pictures and act out what I'm trying to say.
3) After one month: Oh! It turns out that the news anchors are actually saying words here... they're not just moving their tongues really fast and making Spanish noises.
4) After two months: I can understand the majority of what people say, I just don't speak very well.
5) 3 months: I've got this Costa Rican accent down!
6) 5 months: I can understand everything that people say and generally can respond well. I'm way faster conjugating verbs that I was before, I have a better feel of Spanish sentence structure, and the size of my vocabulary has grown significantly.

Yesterday Carrie and I were walking in Zamalek in pursuit of her sense of heaven: Subway. Though we knew the way we decided to take a short cut. We turned off on to a new street and immediately entered into a different world. We left the Westernized Zamalek behind to a find a true piece of the pure heart of Egypt. The street was narrow and cheerfully decorated with streamers for the recently passed Eid, people peacefully meandered aground the many shops. Read more.

Well, November was wonderful! I think that one of the reasons that I didn't write anything was because the newness was kind of worn off, meaning that I really feel like this is my life now. It doesn't feel like I am living on a little vacation anymore. I have a family and friends; I am connected here. Italy is amazing and I couldn't wish for anything more than to be here right now.

Today is the first day of a four day vacation. On Tuesday, the 8th, Italians celebrate the immaculate conception. The only reason that we don't have school on Monday is because of ponte. Ponte is bridge in Italian. We have a bridge from the weekend to the actual holiday. Apparenly, it is a rather big to do, so I am looking forward to celebrating it. Read more.
