March 2010 Archives

It was great to talk to everyone and see how their experiences are going so far. We talked about all the things that surprised us or are different from the US, any problems we are having or had, and about our schools, our towns, our friends, and our families. It made me realize that we are all going through the exact same thoughts and feelings, even if our experiences are different. Overall, it seemed like everyone is having a great time here so far. A few Sundays back I took a day trip with Massimo and Milena to Siena and Montepulciano. For lunch I ate a crepe that was more like lasagna than the crepes that I know. It had spinach and ricotta in the center with tomato sauce on top.

We went to several lookouts in Montepulciano with beautiful traditional Tuscan landscapes before we left for Siena. When we arrived in Siena it was just about sunset, so the light on the city made the bricks a beautiful dark red. Read more.

This school is so different from mine in the states, I never thought about the difference in schools. I was a little preoccupied with the language and the culture. A significant difference as I have said is that the teachers come to you except for electives, which are also different from electives in the states.

But it is more than that; the people in your class are the same for the whole time you are in college. Now if you really don't like them or need to repeat the year, all of these guys are geniuses, then you change classes. Basically the people that I am with have had classes together since they were 5 or 6 years old.

Well things have been happening. I cannot believe that its march. Where has the time gone? Honestly if i think about it i realize how long its been since i was at home but its all flown by like i wouldn't believe it.so yeah...crazy.

A couple weeks ago I went to a birthday party. There were 20 kids hiding in my friends room, and they all jumped out and yelled when she opened the door. She cut a cake and gave everyone a piece. When she was taking a picture with some people, they got some of the marshmallow creme frosting and rubbed in on her face and hair. Then everyone started doing it and she had to go shower. Haha. It was really fun. Read more.

I´ve been going to high school here for about a week now. I go to a private Catholic school in Margarita called La Salle. It is the third hardest school in Panama!!! (And that´s if you speak Spanish!) It is right by the Panama Canal. I have to pass through the canal police checkpoints on my way to school each morning.

My sister goes to the different school, but her cousin goes with me. I get driven there every morning at 7. It´s about 10 minutes away. It´s very difficult, obviously, because I don´t speak Spanish. However, each day I learn new words and understand more. Read more.

On Sunday, March 7th 2010, something awesome happened: My host dad said that I was the best exchange student to be staying with his family! Ok, now this may sound pretty whatever and it was just said as a side comment right before dinner, but I have to say this comment was massive. Read more.

  • das Brot: Bread in loaf form
  • das Brötchen: bun, roll, sandwich on a roll
German food....well, the first things that comes to mind is bread. I eat a lot of bread. In fact, I eat a lot of very delicious bread usually in the form of Brötchen with pretty much every meal. German bread is usually rather hearty and very whole grain. White-bread is called "American Sandwich/toast Brot" and is also popular. However, typical Germans eat hearty whole grain bread.

My daily menu looks something like THIS.

Last weekend I was back in Amsterdam for a Sunday afternoon. I went with another friend on the train, shopped (more like looked longingly at everything I wish I could buy), and in the evening rode my bike back from the train station. Amsterdam is still beautiful, old, and oh so European (and full of annoying tourists who speak British English).

Running. I'm one hundred percent back in action. Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday training with the team, but apparently being "careful" not to over do anything. Of course, I want to be in good shape for Portugal. Read more.

So Rebecca and I have finally gotten our second podcast up! We are still working out some bumps but this one is a little bit smoother and slightly less giggly. We talk about our recent trip to Ankara and Cappadocia, and about our life here in Adana. We also include a little bit of Turkish! We appreciate comments or feedback, so please feel free to do so!

Due to my lack of activities lately, I haven't posted but things have picked up recently. My new host family is very welcoming and eager to show me things. My host granddad (Dada) has even made a list! Although my host sister is usually doing her studies or working with the student council, my host mom is usually ready to take me out and we've gone to see some movies. Read more.
