My brother, Paco, and I have done some nice traveling in an attempt to occupy our time before school starts. We just got back from Cuenca. Cuenca is located in the southern part of the country. We took a bus down there which was far from comfortable. It took about 6 hours to get there. The drive is beautiful though. You know those car commercials you see where a car is smoothly winding around a bend and when you look out there is nothing but mountains and the open road? That's the ride to Cuenca. Read more.

So last week we went on this amazing trip to the Galapagos-- we went to see the giant tortoises and iguanas the first day, we had these really cool guides with us, Sabina and Alejandro, who were with us most of the time. Then we went to a little beach as the sun was going down. In the evening, I went out with these three girls in the group from Machala and hung out by the port. Read more.

AFSer Jessie: "I am in Ecuador!"

I am in Ecuador! I am only several days into my AFS experience and my perception of America, Spanish speaking countries, education and life in general have significantly changed. I am writing this e-mail on my new friend's laptop. His name is Adrian and were are incredibly similar, it is as if we have know each other our entire lives. I have observed that the AFS experience attracts people of the same kind, no matter what language they speak or their country of origin. Read more.

AFSer Sarah: Burning Dolls in Ecuador

For New Year's Eve we went to Zamora. I really liked the way they celebrated New Year's. Everyone makes these "Muñecas" called Años Viejos of the bad things from the last year. Then at midnight, everyone lights fire to the big dolls in the streets or on the roofs (burning the bad things of the old year to make way for the new).

I´m getting along really well with my host mom now. Back in Piñas, school is almost over. it´s our last week. My friends are great. my closest friends are: Gabi, Monica, Fabiola and Anabel. They're goofy. Then of course the exchange students are great too. :) I really really love that the group of exchange students in my town are so close, like a second family. they´re all really great, like a big second family (AFS family) Read more.

Hola everyone, sorry I haven´t written in a while! I´ve been so busy! (that's good though!)

My 16th birthday was yesterday! Yay it was nice and cool, which was nice for me :) At school everyone was so cool - they all came up and gave me hugs and wished me a feliz cumpleaños and many more. the people in my class were like -- she needs a cake! she needs a cake! 50 cent everyone! Then they went out and bought a cake and brought it to my class! They sang and I blew out the candles. Then they said, "take a bite out of the side of the cake now! go ahead!" and I was like "okay.." So I leaned down to take a bite -- and they pushed my face into the cake! I had frosting all over my face! Haha! It turns out it is a tradition at every birthday in Ecuador! Read more.

AFSer Abby: Election Day in Ecuador

So yesterday was Election Day in Ecuador. Ever since I got here there have been signs everywhere saying, "Vota no!" or "Si, mil veces, si!" It has also been the big topic of conversation among people. I still don't completely understand it all, even though I had it explained to me about four or five times. Read more.

AFSer Abby Lost in Ecuador

haha, it was bound to happen, right? :)

My dear friends, gather round as I recount my adventure. It begins on a seemingly normal day after a long 9 hours of endless translations at my wonderful new workplace in the which I am serving as a volunteer:) (it is called JUCONI and it helps to keep kids off the streets). My dear sweet coordinator Nadia had shown me the bus route that I was to take in order to return from my workplace to my home a few days earlier... now, I was going to try it out...Read more.
